Kenya protest over US Ebola quarantine centre leaves two dead

Two people were killed when police opened fire on demonstrators opposing a U.S.-backed 50‑bed Ebola quarantine facility at Laikipia Air Base in Nanyuki, Kenya. Protest organiser Patrick Wahome said both victims died of gunshot wounds, while police said they were unaware of any fatalities.

President William Ruto defended the plan, saying it was requested by U.S. President Donald Trump and is part of a long‑standing health partnership, adding “We are a responsible government.” The Kenyan High Court barred construction of the centre until the government discloses its agreements with Washington, setting a hearing for June 23. The facility was intended to isolate Americans exposed to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola from the Democratic Republic of Congo or Uganda, though officials said it would also serve Kenyans and other nationals. The outbreak has been declared a global health emergency by the WHO, with over 900 suspected cases and more than 200 suspected deaths.
