Kenya sets November 14 deadline for human rights violation compensation claims

The Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations has announced that it will stop accepting new compensation claims on November 14, 2026. The deadline applies to victims of human rights violations, including those arising from public protests and demonstrations.

Chairperson Professor Makau Mutua urged eligible applicants to submit their claims before the window closes, stating, “It is our commitment that no eligible victim shall be left behind.” The panel noted that all claims, including those already submitted, will undergo a process of verification and authentication before decisions are finalized. Once assessments are complete, claimants will be notified of the outcomes.

The compensation programme addresses various categories of harm, such as fatalities, injuries, sexual violence, and economic loss. In a recent phase of the programme, the panel approved Ksh83.65 million for 259 claimants, which included both civilians and uniformed officers. This disbursement covered individuals with severe and moderate injuries.
