Kenya human rights violation compensation programme
Overview
The Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations in Kenya has been implementing a multi-phase programme to provide reparations to victims of human rights violations, including those resulting from public protests and demonstrations. The programme covers civilians and uniformed officers, addressing fatalities, injuries, sexual violence, and economic losses.
In the sixth phase of the programme, the panel approved Ksh83.65 million for 259 claimants. This included Ksh35 million for 35 victims with severe injuries, Ksh27 million for 54 victims with moderate injuries, and Ksh13.5 million for seven claims involving aggravated injuries. Additional funds were allocated for minor injuries and economic losses.
As the programme progresses, the panel has established a deadline of November 14, 2026, for the submission of new compensation claims. Chairperson Professor Makau Mutua stated that the panel is committed to ensuring “no eligible victim shall be left behind,” noting that all claims undergo a rigorous verification and authentication process.
