Kenya shuts multiple schools after student unrest and dormitory fires

Loreto Girls' High School in Limuru was closed indefinitely on June 3 after a student unrest incident. The school issued a notice directing parents to collect their daughters immediately, though details of the disturbance were not disclosed. The closure follows a series of recent unrest cases in Kenyan schools, including the deadly Utumishi Girls' Academy fire that killed 16 students.

On June 4, Lang’ata High School also closed indefinitely after a fire broke out in a dormitory. Staff said a student set a mattress alight, damaging two cubicles, but no students were injured. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is probing the incident and has accessed CCTV footage. Earlier that day, Alliance High School was closed after a fire in an old dormitory, and ten students were arrested. Other schools such as Lenana High, Kangaru, and Kangaru Girls have reported similar incidents, prompting a wave of closures across the country.
