Kenya sports department faces scrutiny over Ksh2.176 billion in pending bills

Kenya's State Department for Sports is facing scrutiny over Ksh2.176 billion in pending bills, largely attributed to ongoing stadium construction and rehabilitation projects across the country. During a National Assembly Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture meeting, lawmakers raised concerns regarding the government's ability to fund these massive infrastructure developments. MP Dan Wanyama cautioned that poor planning and budgeting could lead to unfinished projects and mounting financial obligations.

President William Ruto has championed several major projects, including the Talanta Sports City Stadium, which is reportedly 94 per cent complete and expected to host matches by late 2026. Other significant works include renovations at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and construction at various sites such as Kipchoge Keino Stadium, Bukhungu Stadium, and several constituency sports academies.

While officials noted that they will prioritize the verification of outstanding claims before requesting funds from the National Treasury, the Auditor-General has already flagged a Sh10 billion budget increase for the Talanta Sports City Stadium. The committee warned that failure to settle these verified bills could lead to legal disputes with contractors and suppliers.
