Kenya sports department financial and legal scrutiny

Kenya’s sports sector is facing significant financial and legal scrutiny. Initially, the State Department for Sports came under investigation by the National Assembly regarding Ksh2.176 billion in pending bills. These debts are largely linked to large-scale infrastructure projects, such as the Talanta Sports City Stadium and various stadium renovations across the country. Lawmakers expressed concerns that inadequate budgeting could result in unfinished projects and legal disputes with contractors.

Following these concerns over departmental finances, legal action was taken regarding the alleged misappropriation of funds. The Director of Public Prosecutions approved graft charges against former Sports Principal Secretary Peter Kirimi Kaberia and several other officials and businessmen. The charges involve the alleged misuse of Ksh330 million that had been allocated for Kenya’s preparations to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN). The case includes allegations of abuse of office, financial misconduct, and conspiracy to commit economic crimes.
