Kenya surveyors urge property owners to prepare for El Niño rains
The Institution of Surveyors of Kenya (ISK) has issued an urgent advisory to property owners, landlords, and facility managers to prepare for anticipated El Niño rains. ISK President Eric Nyadimo emphasized that proactive maintenance and contingency planning are essential to minimize property damage, protect occupants, and ensure the continuity of essential building services.
Key recommendations include clearing silt, debris, and waste from drains, culverts, and stormwater channels to prevent blockages. Property managers are also urged to inspect and repair roofs, gutters, downpipes, and manhole covers. Specific attention should be given to basements, where owners are advised to review waterproofing, drainage, and sump-pump systems, and to move critical equipment away from potential water entry points.
Additionally, the ISK advised inspecting retaining walls, foundations, and slopes for signs of erosion or instability. For properties with septic tanks, emptying limited-capacity units is recommended to prevent overflow. In flood-prone areas, the institution called for the establishment of clear evacuation routes and emergency procedures, warning against using riparian areas for storage or occupation.
