Kenya to destroy Sh8.2 billion methamphetamine haul in Mombasa

Kenyan government officials are set to destroy a massive methamphetamine haul valued at approximately Sh8.2 billion in Mombasa. The consignment, consisting of over 1,036 kilograms of the drug, was intercepted on the high seas aboard the vessel Mashaallah, which was reportedly unregistered and stateless.

Six Iranian nationals—Jaseem Darzadeh Nia, Nadeem Jadgal, Hassan Baloch, Raheem Baksh, Imran Baloch, and Imtiyaz Daryay—face charges after a Shanzu court ruled they have a case to answer. The prosecution established a prima facie case following the presentation of 12 witnesses.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that the government intends to go beyond destroying the drugs by targeting the financial and physical assets of traffickers. He stated that the state plans to repossess land used for the distribution or processing of narcotics and illicit alcohol, treating such property as proceeds of crime. Additionally, Murkomen relayed a directive from President William Ruto that any government official found colluding with drug trafficking networks will face dismissal and prosecution.
