Methamphetamine trafficking case in Kenya
Overview
Six Iranian nationals are facing trial in Kenya following the interception of over 1,036 kilograms of methamphetamine aboard the unregistered vessel Mashaallah. The shipment, which was allegedly intercepted on the high seas and may have been loaded at Pozm Port in Iran, has an estimated street value of approximately Sh8.2 billion.
A Shanzu court ruled that the prosecution established a prima facie case after presenting evidence and calling 12 witnesses. In response to the seizure, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that the government intends to destroy the methamphetamine haul in Mombasa.
Furthermore, the Kenyan government has signaled a crackdown on trafficking infrastructure. Murkomen stated that the state plans to repossess land used for processing or distributing narcotics, treating such property as proceeds of crime. He also relayed a directive from President William Ruto that any government official found colluding with drug trafficking networks will face dismissal and prosecution.
