Kenya: Two separate tragedies involving sewage pits claim lives
A 12-year-old student from Maweni Primary School died after falling into a soft sewer pit in Nyali, Mombasa County. The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. while the boy was returning home from tuition classes. According to police, the child was playing on the soft surface of the pit when a parked bus accidentally pushed the top of the structure, causing the ground to cave in. Emergency teams from the Mombasa Fire Brigade and the Kenya Red Cross retrieved the boy, who was later pronounced dead at Coast General Hospital.
In a separate incident in Migori County, two children, aged five and one, drowned in a neglected sewage pit in Kowuor village, Rongo. Their bodies were discovered floating in the pit on a Sunday morning after a villager noticed a sandal in the water. The children had reportedly traveled from the Masara area to visit their grandmother. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
