Kenyan football faces league disputes and AFCON squad announcements

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President McDonald Mariga has called for stakeholders to resolve the ongoing dispute regarding the delayed 2026/27 league season. The stalemate follows legal challenges to the federation’s 2025 regulations, resulting in a High Court order that requires the FKF to revert to its 2019 rules for managing promotion and relegation. Mariga emphasized that the uncertainty poses a risk to clubs, players, and sponsors, particularly as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Uganda and Tanzania.

In parallel developments for the national team, Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has announced a 38-man provisional squad for the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign. The squad features the return of key players Michael Olunga and Joseph Okumu following significant injury layoffs. McCarthy has also integrated several young prospects into the lineup, including Kevin Wangaya, Louis Millard, and Javan Ochieng, alongside European-based talents Aldrine Kibet and Amos Wanjala.
