Kenya AFCON 2027 preparations

Kenya is advancing administrative and infrastructural preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

On the administrative side, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has faced legal challenges regarding the 2026/27 league season, with a High Court order requiring a reversion to 2019 regulations for promotion and relegation. Meanwhile, national team coach Benni McCarthy has announced a 38-man provisional squad for the qualifying campaign.

Infrastructure development remains a primary focus. The government is utilizing the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund (SASDF) to borrow approximately Sh38.74 billion to complete 33 stadium projects across more than 20 counties, including upgrades in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret. The 60,000-seat Raila Odinga Talanta City Stadium in Nairobi is nearing completion and includes an independent electricity substation and three training grounds.

A recent inspection by a Confederation of African Football (CAF) delegation yielded a positive assessment. The Raila Odinga International Stadium is reportedly at 95% completion and has received an 80% rating for hosting readiness, though CAF has recommended expanding media and press facilities. At Kasarani Stadium, contractors are addressing specific CAF requirements, with completion expected by December. To prevent disruptions to local football, work on Nyayo Stadium and the Ulinzi Sports Complex has been deferred until the completion of Kasarani or the Raila Odinga Stadium.
