Kenyan Leaders Urge Discipline and Values in Schools Amid Recent Unrest

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and President William Ruto addressed students at the 60th anniversary of Burieruri Boys Senior School, warning that academic achievement alone is insufficient without moral values and discipline. Kindiki highlighted the government’s increased education budget – Sh 784 billion – and the recruitment of 124,000 teachers, along with plans for 23,000 new classrooms and 1,600 science labs, emphasizing a student‑centred funding model.

Ruto cautioned learners to consider the long‑term consequences of violent behaviour, referencing the May 28 arson at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil that killed 16 students and led to murder charges against eight suspects. Both leaders called on families and communities to jointly nurture responsible, peaceful youth.

The statements come as Kenya confronts a wave of school‑based unrest, prompting a broader push for value‑based education and stronger community involvement.
