Kenyan mental health researcher Dr Victoria Mutiso killed in Nairobi shooting

Prominent Kenyan clinical psychologist and mental‑health researcher Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso was ambushed and shot dead on a Nairobi morning near Kenyatta National Hospital. Police say a four‑wheel‑drive vehicle blocked the taxi she was in before two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at close range. She suffered critical gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

Investigators treat the killing as a targeted murder. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over the case, securing forensic evidence including a spent cartridge for ballistic analysis and interviewing witnesses. Dr Mutiso had previously reported threats after an earlier incident where armed men pointed a gun at her while she was in traffic. She was head of research at the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation, specialised in youth mental health, and was a mother of two with a wedding planned for the following week.
