Murder charges filed in Dr. Victoria Mutiso case

Overview

On August 27, 2026, Machakos politician Rose Mbithe, her children Angela and Chris Mulwa, and Police Constable Elijah Kibelion Kimoi were charged with the murder of Dr. Victoria Mutiso at the Milimani Law Courts. Justice Kanyi Kimondo directed that the four suspects undergo mental assessments before formally answering the charges, which allege the group acted jointly to kill the former Director of the African Institute of Mental and Brain Health.

Forensic examinations have linked spent cartridges and bullet fragments recovered from the crime scene to a recovered Mini Jericho pistol.

In a separate proceeding at the Mavoko Law Court, a seven-day deadline was imposed on the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to conclude investigations into allegations involving a Range Rover and a 21-acre property linked to the deceased. The court ruled that if no decision is reached within this timeframe, Angela Mulwa and Nelson Masiga will be released unconditionally. Masiga has reportedly requested to be admitted as a state witness.

By August 31, 2026, the investigation expanded into Uganda, where Police Constable Collins Kiplangat Bett and Pius Muiru Mbugua were arrested in Kampala. A coordinated operation involving the Kenyan Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Uganda Police Force, and Interpol led to their apprehension. Detectives allege Bett was involved in surveillance and served as a co-driver during the July 29 gangland-style shooting in Nairobi, while Mbugua acted as a paymaster for the execution team. The Ugandan Foreign Affairs ministry is currently processing the extradition of these suspects, along with a third suspect, Samuel Karanja Gathoni, who was intercepted in Nairobi, to face murder charges in the Kenyan High Court.
