Investigation into murder of Kenyan researcher Dr. Victoria
Overview
On July 29, 2026, Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, a prominent Kenyan clinical psychologist and researcher, was ambushed and shot dead near Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi. The attack involved a four-wheel-drive vehicle blocking her taxi before two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire. Dr. Mutiso, who had previously reported threats, died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation, led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), initially linked the ambush to a stolen Toyota Prado connected to a February demolition of Mutiso’s property in Mlolongo. This led to the arraignment of Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her son Chris Mulwa, amid a protracted land dispute involving a 21-acre parcel valued at over Ksh 2 billion.
On August 6, 2026, DCI Detective Chief Inspector Mohamed Amin announced that a police officer had been identified and arrested as the shooter. The investigation also revealed that Dr. Mutiso’s lawyer, Kyalo Mbobu, was targeted in the attack. Investigators recovered the suspected murder weapon and the motorcycle used in the ambush.
By August 9, 2026, detectives uncovered a KSh 1.5 million bounty plot, alleging a mastermind promised KSh 500,000 to each of three police officers to carry out the assassination. A manhunt was launched for two fleeing officers, Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang and Bett Kiplangat Collins. Additionally, a second stolen Toyota Prado was recovered in Kisii County, believed to have been involved in the interception of Mutiso's taxi.
