Kenyan President William Ruto launches national talks on post‑Vision 2030
President William Ruto met former West Pokot Senator Samuel Poghisio at State House in Nairobi on 30 July, discussing development of the Rift Valley and inclusive leadership. In a later address, Ruto acknowledged that Kenya has fallen short of Vision 2030 goals, noting the country is far from the target of becoming an upper‑middle‑income economy by 2030.
Ruto unveiled a new long‑term development framework called Beyond Vision 2030 and scheduled the launch of a National Conversation on the country’s future for 12 August 2026, inviting leaders from government, business, civil society and academia. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen defended the plan and expressed confidence that Ruto will win re‑election in 2027. Former Interior Secretary Fred Matiang‘i criticized the proposed dialogue as a diversion, highlighting security concerns and alleged erosion of constitutional institutions.
The series of statements marks a shift in Kenya’s development agenda ahead of the 2027 general election, with the government seeking broader public input while facing opposition from former officials.
