Kenyan President William Ruto Hires 100,000 Teachers and Appoints New Energy Regulator Chair

Energy Cabinet Secretary James Opiyo Wandayi praised President William Ruto for overseeing the recruitment of more than 100,000 teachers in the past three and a half years, a scale far above the previous maximum of about 5,000 hires per year. The administration plans to add another 20,000 teachers next year as part of a broader education budget that also funds intern‑teacher conversions, school feeding programmes and scholarships.

In a separate move, President Ruto appointed former Bumula MP Moses Wekesa Mwambu Mabonga as chair of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) for a three‑year term, effective 24 July 2026. He also named Faith Akiru Kuno to EPRA’s board and revoked the appointment of Jennipher Nawoi Long’or. The reshuffle follows the resignation of EPRA’s former director‑general amid a fuel‑importation investigation, and includes the revocation of the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation chair and the reappointment of the National Irrigation Authority board chair.
