Kenyan Senator Edwin Sifuna Accuses President Ruto of Selling Nation Over U.S. Ebola Deal

Senator Edwin Sifuna said President William Ruto would sell Kenya to the highest bidder, linking a proposed U.S.-Kenya Ebola quarantine and treatment centre to a monetary incentive. He argued the deal, which includes a commitment of Ksh 1.74 billion from the United States, could expose Kenyans to risk and claimed it reflects a broader pattern, citing Kenya’s police deployment to Haiti.

Sifuna called for Ruto’s removal, describing the administration as causing widespread harm. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also condemned the deal as reckless and unpatriotic, while the High Court issued conservatory orders after a petition by the Katiba Institute. The government’s Medical Services Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga defended the initiative on global health‑security grounds, noting Kenya’s prior role in hosting COVID‑19 patients.
