Kenya's ODM party faces internal division one year after Raila Odinga's death

One year after the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is experiencing significant internal instability and leadership disputes. The party, which was previously defined by Odinga’s singular authority, is currently struggling to navigate its political identity and its relationship with President William Ruto’s administration.

Internal tensions have manifested in public confrontations involving high-ranking officials. Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi recently criticized Ida Odinga, the late leader's widow, following her remarks regarding politicians who missed her husband's anniversary commemorations. Additionally, the removal of Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, who had opposed closer cooperation with the government, has become a central flashpoint in the struggle over the party's direction.

Political analysts suggest that Odinga’s absence has created a vacuum, as the opposition's ability to unite previously relied heavily on his personal authority and negotiating capacity. The party is now divided between those seeking to maintain independence and those favoring cooperation with the current administration.
