Kenya's politicians hire unemployed youth as 'goons' to spark election violence

In Kenya, political actors are recruiting large numbers of unemployed young men as hired thugs, known locally as “goons,” to attend rallies, intimidate opponents and turn peaceful protests into violent confrontations.

A Nairobi‑based study by Odipo Dev reports that local party officials pay about 500 Kenyan shillings (≈ $3.8) per goon, while members of parliament may pay up to 1,000 shillings (≈ $7.7). With roughly 800,000 youths entering the labour market each year but only about 100,000 jobs available, recruiters can enlist dozens or hundreds at a time.

Interviewees such as 27‑year‑old “Marius,” raised in the Korogocho slum, say they lost teeth and now rarely see their children after being hired for violent tasks. All those interviewed said they had worked for supporters of President William Ruto, a claim the government denies.

Police are reported to turn a blind eye to armed goons entering public gatherings, raising concerns about the fairness and safety of the upcoming elections.
