Kenya's Social Health Authority Releases Ksh4 bn to Settle Defunct NHIF Hospital Claims

The Kenyan Government, through the Social Health Authority (SHA), has released Sh4 billion to settle verified outstanding claims inherited from the defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). The payout targets 3,527 eligible healthcare facilities nationwide, covering claims of Sh10 million and below. Facilities must complete a regional sign‑off exercise, confirming that their verified claims are fully settled before payments are released. The sign‑off schedule runs from July 6 in the Western region (Kisumu) through July 24 in the North‑Eastern region (Garissa), covering all counties across the country.

SHA also announced compensation for victims of recent public protests, confirming that 157 victims – including 57 fatalities – will receive payments totaling Ksh225.4 million, with families of the deceased each receiving Ksh3 million and severely injured individuals Ksh1 million each. The authority plans to seek additional budget support for larger claims exceeding Sh10 million per facility in the 2026/27 fiscal year.
