India monsoon floods kill over 100, trigger alerts across 20 states
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of yellow, orange and red alerts as the monsoon season intensifies, forecasting heavy to very heavy rain across dozens of states including Uttarakhand, Odisha, Kerala, Karnataka, and the Delhi‑NCR region. The widespread downpours have caused severe water‑logging, road closures and crop damage.
Official data show more than 100 deaths in India since July. Assam bears the brunt with at least 87 fatalities, 47 of them in Sivasagar district. Kerala reports 26 deaths, 11 injuries, four missing persons and more than 27,000 people in 462 relief camps. Himachal Pradesh records 64 rain‑related deaths, including 14 landslides. Rajasthan and other states also experienced heavy rain, with the Baretha Dam in Bharatpur rising to 26.60 ft, prompting alerts for 50 villages.
Delhi‑NCR received moderate rain that eased humidity, while Gurugram and surrounding areas faced water‑logged streets and traffic snarls. The IMD continues to warn of isolated thunderstorms, landslide risk in hilly regions and flooding in low‑lying areas, urging residents to stay vigilant.
