Kerala floods trigger mass evacuations amid intense monsoon rains

Intense monsoon rains in southern India have triggered severe flooding, landslides, and river overflows across the state of Kerala. The emergency reached a critical phase between August 1 and August 4, 2026, causing significant damage to infrastructure and resulting in fatalities.

In the Pathanamthitta district, the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services conducted a continuous 70-hour mission to evacuate 3,627 people, including the elderly, pregnant women, children, and medical patients. Emergency teams also worked to deliver essential supplies such as food, water, and medicine to isolated communities.

Heavy rainfall was particularly concentrated in the central districts of Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Kottayam. Specific areas recorded extreme precipitation levels, including 33 centimeters in Vadasserikkara and 31.4 centimeters in Vagamon, leading to rapid rises in water levels and the isolation of numerous residential and urban areas.
