Flooding and monsoon rains in Kerala

Intense monsoon rains in Kerala have caused severe flooding, landslides, and river overflows, particularly impacting the districts of Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Kottayam. Between August 1 and August 4, 2026, extreme precipitation—including up to 33 centimeters in Vadasserikkara—led to rapid rises in water levels and the isolation of various residential and urban areas.

Emergency response efforts included a 70-hour mission by the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services to evacuate 3,627 people, including vulnerable populations such as the elderly and medical patients. Authorities have opened additional relief camps and evacuated residents from low-lying areas in districts including Alappuzha, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Kannur due to road inundation and riverbank collapses along the Chaliyar River.

The disaster has prompted debates regarding river management. Environmentalists suggest that restoring natural flood-carrying capacity through the protection of floodplains and removal of encroachments is necessary, while some local stakeholders argue that bans on sand mining have allowed silt to accumulate and reduce river capacity.
