Kerala government announces Onam welfare benefits and early pensions
The Kerala government has announced several welfare measures and financial benefits ahead of the Onam festival. Chief Minister VD Satheesan confirmed the early release of August pensions to more than 65 lakh beneficiaries, starting August 19. The government has sanctioned over Rs 1,105 crore for social security, welfare pensions, and various other schemes.
In addition to pension updates, the state is providing 4 kg of rice to every student from pre-primary up to Class 8 in all government and aided schools. Education Minister N Shamsuddeen also noted that schools have been permitted to allow students to wear casual clothes for Onam celebrations.
For the cashew industry, the Cashew Industry Relations Committee has approved a 20% bonus for workers for the year 2026. This includes an advance payment of ₹11,500 to be paid by August 23. Salaried staff in cashew factories will receive an advance bonus equivalent to three months' salary.
