Kerala government seeks to cancel bail for Pinarayi Vijayan's security officers

The Kerala state government has filed a petition in the Kerala High Court to withdraw the anticipatory bail granted to five members of former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s security detail. The bail was originally issued by a Sessions Judge in Alappuzha after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was set up to probe an assault that occurred on 15 December 2023 during the Navakerala Sadas programme.

According to police reports, the security personnel left the minister’s escort vehicle, struck Youth Congress and KSU protesters with wooden lathis, and caused injuries. The SIT, constituted in May 2026, collected video footage and concluded there was prima‑facie evidence of an offence under IPC Section 308. The state argues that the bail order is factually incorrect, particularly the claim that the lathis had been surrendered, and asserts that custodial interrogation is needed for a fair investigation.

The government’s plea contends that the accused were not authorized to carry the weapons used and that further inquiry is required to establish common intention and possible violations of security protocols.
