Kerala: IUML supports CPI in dispute with CPIM over opposition leadership
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has joined the growing political friction between the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) in Kerala. Senior IUML leader and former MLA K. P. A. Majeed expressed support for the CPI in its dispute regarding the post of Deputy Leader of the Opposition.
Majeed criticized Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, alleging that he treats smaller allies within the Left Democratic Front (LDF) as subordinates. The conflict stems from the CPI's demand for the Deputy Leader of the Opposition position, as they are the second-largest party in the opposition coalition. However, Vijayan has rejected this demand, asserting that the post will be held by a CPIM leader.
Majeed argued that the CPI has been systematically marginalized within the LDF, noting that key organizational roles like Chairman and Convenor remain dominated by the CPIM. He also highlighted the CPI's historical contributions to Kerala's development, particularly during the C. Achutha Menon administration.
