Gyanesh Kumar: Kerala orders fresh vigilance probe into 2006 case

The Kerala government has ordered a fresh Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) inquiry into allegations involving Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The probe concerns his 2006 tenure as the Kerala Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary during the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) road development on MC Road.

The investigation is linked to the 2006 suicide of Lee See Been, a Malaysian civil engineer associated with the PATI-BEL consortium. A purported suicide note reportedly named Kumar and alleged corruption and pressure from officials regarding project payments and penalties.

The new inquiry, directed by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala following a complaint by Congress leader Malayinkeezhu Venugopal, also aims to determine if the original 2006 preliminary investigation was derailed by external or political pressure. The Home Department has summoned all relevant files from the previous inquiry to facilitate the process.
