Vigilance inquiry into Gyanesh Kumar in Kerala

Overview

The Kerala government has initiated a fresh Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) inquiry into allegations of corruption involving Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The investigation focuses on Kumar’s 2006 tenure as the Kerala Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary during the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) road development on MC Road.

The probe is linked to the 2006 suicide of Lee See Been, a Malaysian civil engineer associated with the PATI-BEL consortium. A suicide note reportedly named Kumar and alleged corruption and pressure from officials regarding project payments and penalties.

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala ordered the inquiry following a complaint by Congress leader Malayinkeezhu Venugopal. The investigation seeks to determine if the original 2006 preliminary inquiry was derailed by political or external pressure. While the case involves allegations of irregularities in awarding public works contracts, Health Minister K Muralidharan stated the inquiry is not politically motivated, clarifying that it targets Kumar’s actions as a former secretary rather than his current role as CEC.
