Kerala to introduce new law for senior citizens' welfare
Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan has announced that a draft law designed to provide legal protection and welfare assurances for senior citizens will be introduced in the state Legislative Assembly this month. The move comes in response to a rapid demographic shift, with projections suggesting the elderly will comprise 38 per cent of Kerala's population by 2036.
The proposed initiatives include collecting comprehensive data on all senior citizens across the state and establishing specialized care mechanisms for individuals who are bedridden, suffering from dementia, or requiring palliative care. Additionally, the government plans to extend caregiver services to financially disadvantaged elderly citizens.
To address professional needs, a structured training program for elderly care—consisting of a six-month certificate course and one year of practical training—is scheduled to launch next year. The Chief Minister also expressed intent to integrate seniors into the state's economic development by utilizing their expertise to mentor young entrepreneurs.
