Kerala and Tamil Nadu Form New State Governments After Elections

In Kerala, Congress‑led United Democratic Front (UDF) chief minister‑designate V. D. Satheesan announced a 20‑member cabinet ahead of his swearing‑in on May 18. The list, submitted to Governor Rajendra Arlekar, includes senior Congress figures such as Ramesh Chennithala, who is expected to receive the Home and Vigilance portfolios, and representatives of alliance partners – the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) with five berths, Kerala Congress factions and the Revolutionary Socialist Party. Discussions on ministerial allocations were finalised after intensive negotiations involving Satheesan, KPCC president Sunny Joseph and AICC general secretary Deepa Dasmunsi.

In Tamil Nadu, actor‑turned‑politician C. Joseph Vijay (known as “Thalapathy”) was sworn in as chief minister on May 10. He retained key departments—including Home, Police, Women and Child Welfare, Youth Welfare, Urban Development and Special Programme Implementation—while assigning finance to senior minister K. A. Sengottaiyan and other portfolios to a newly named cabinet of 20 ministers. Vijay’s daily convoy movement from his Neelankarai residence to the Secretariat was adjusted to minimise traffic disruption.

Superstar Rajinikanth addressed widespread social‑media speculation about his relationship with the new Tamil Nadu government. He denied any jealousy or political involvement, clarified that his meeting with former chief minister M. K. Stalin was purely personal, and praised Vijay’s historic electoral victory. Rajinikanth also dismissed rumors that he had tried to block Vijay’s rise, noting the 25‑year generation gap between them.

Both states thus see fresh administrations taking shape, with coalition balancing in Kerala and a film‑industry leader heading the Tamil Nadu government, accompanied by high‑profile commentary from Rajinikanth.
