Keri Russell explains why she and Matthew Rhys will not marry

Actress Keri Russell has shared her reasons for not marrying longtime partner Matthew Rhys, despite the couple being together for nearly 13 years. During an appearance on the ‘Dear Chelsea’ podcast, Russell described marriage as ‘antiquated,’ noting that she has already experienced a wedding in her previous marriage to Shane Deary.

Russell explained that she feels no need to formalize the relationship through paperwork, citing that having children together provides a sense of permanence. She also noted that modern social and financial shifts, such as women's ability to hold credit cards independently and the lack of necessity to change surnames, have changed her perspective on the institution.

Additionally, Russell addressed the public criticism regarding Rhys failing to mention her during his recent Emmy Award acceptance speeches. She revealed that the omission was intentional, as she had encouraged him to ‘take me off your plate’ to alleviate his extreme nervousness about public speaking during the ceremony.
