Keskin Mayor Ekmel Cönger Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Bribery

Kırıkkale Cumhuriyet Başsavcılığı filed an indictment accusing Keskin municipality mayor Ekmel Cönger and contractor M.Y. of taking bribes. The case was heard by the Kırıkkale 1st Heavy Penal Court, which concluded that the bribery charge was proven.

The court sentenced Cönger to 5 years, 2 months and 15 days of imprisonment and ordered the deprivation of certain civil rights under Turkish Penal Code article 53/5. Contractor M.Y. received a 6‑year, 3‑month term with the same rights restriction. Cönger’s lawyer claimed the mayor was under hospital treatment and that evidence was incomplete, while the contractor denied any involvement. The mayor did not attend the hearing, whereas the contractor and his lawyers were present.
