Keszthely's Helikon Beach Closed Temporarily Over Water Quality Concerns

The Zala County Government Office ordered a temporary swimming ban at the Helikon Beach in Keszthely, Hungary, effective July 29, after the latest water‑quality test showed bacterial levels exceeding health limits. The municipality confirmed the ban, noting that the concentration of E. coli and Enterococcus was above the permitted threshold, though follow‑up samples indicated a gradual decline.

The restriction applies only to Helikon Beach; the other two city beaches – the City Beach and Libás Beach – remain open with satisfactory water quality. Authorities will collect additional samples in the coming days and will lift the ban once results meet safety standards. The mayor also addressed public complaints about a 400‑forint toilet fee, suggesting the fee may have contributed to contamination and announcing a police complaint against an unknown perpetrator. Discussions are underway to make restroom use free.
