In late July 2026, the Keszthely city council took two separate actions affecting municipal facilities and regional cooperation. On July 22, the council voted to suspend the town’s membership in the Balaton Association, citing high dues, alleged exclusion from the board, and concerns over the election of the association’s president. The same meeting saw the termination of the contract with the operator of the city’s dog‑beach park, with the mayor accusing the previous administration of an unfavorable deal and the operator of operating without a proper permit.

A week later, on July 31, the Zala County Government Office ordered a temporary swimming ban at Helikon Beach after water‑quality tests revealed bacterial levels above health limits. While the ban applied only to Helikon Beach, the city’s other beaches remained open. The mayor linked the issue to public complaints about a toilet fee and announced a police complaint regarding the contamination, while also considering making restroom use free.
