KFOR Commander reports improved security in Kosovo
KFOR Commander Major General Ozkan Ulutash stated that the security situation in Kosovo has improved in recent years and remains generally stable. He noted that following the increased tensions and violence in 2023, which included attacks against KFOR peacekeepers in Zveçan, NATO halted the deployment of reserve forces in January of this year.
Ulutash emphasized that while KFOR provides essential military contributions, the path to long-term stability is political rather than military. He affirmed NATO's full support for the EU-facilitated dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina as the framework for resolving outstanding issues while respecting the rights of all communities.
As he concludes his second mandate, Ulutash announced that NATO has begun a process to optimize its presence over the coming year to ensure the mission remains responsive to evolving security developments. He will be succeeded by Italian Major General Roberto Vergori.
