KFOR security mission in Kosovo

Overview

KFOR Commander Major General Ozkan Ulutash reported that the security situation in Kosovo has improved and remains generally stable following periods of increased tension and violence in 2023. While NATO halted the deployment of reserve forces in January 2026, Ulutash noted that long-term stability depends on political dialogue facilitated by the EU rather than military action.

As his mandate nears its conclusion, Ulutash announced that NATO is beginning a process to optimize its presence to remain responsive to security developments. He is scheduled to be succeeded by Italian Major General Roberto Vergori. In a meeting with the United States Chargé d'Affaires, Anu Prattipati, Ulutash expressed appreciation for the significant long-term contributions made by the United States to the KFOR mission.
