Khalida Boufedech Becomes First Woman to Lead Algeria's Lower House
On 28 July 2024, Khalida Boufedech, a deputy of the Front de libération nationale (FLN) from Algiers, was elected president of Algeria’s Assembly populaire nationale (APN). She secured 302 of the 366 votes cast, defeating Amine Allouche (57 votes) and Rachid Hassani (7 votes). The election, conducted by secret ballot, marks the first time a woman has headed the lower chamber since Algeria’s independence in 1962, making her the third‑ranking official in the state protocol after the president and the president of the council of the nation.
Boufedech, a 44‑year‑old medical doctor specialized in allergology and clinical immunology, previously served as chief of service at the Directorate of Health of Algiers wilaya and held local elected offices in Bordj El Bahri (2012‑2017) and the Algiers wilaya assembly (from 2021).
