Khalida Boufedeche Elected First Female President of Algeria's Assembly

On 28 July 2026, Khalida Boufedeche, a 44‑year‑old allergist and FLN deputy, was elected president of Algeria’s People’s National Assembly (APN), becoming the first woman to hold the post since the chamber’s creation in 1977. She won the secret ballot with 302 of 366 votes, defeating candidates from the MSP and RCD parties. Following her election, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received her for a symbolic audience, congratulating her and outlining expectations for greater institutional complementarity and responsiveness to citizens’ needs.

Boufedeche’s background includes a medical career at the University Hospital of Béni Messous and senior roles in the health directorate of Algiers. Her election occurs as women occupy only 25 of the 407 parliamentary seats (6.1 %). The FLN secured 91 seats, maintaining a parliamentary majority.
