Khasi Students’ Union leader arrested in Shillong violence case

Meghalaya Police have arrested a sixth leader of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in connection with violence that occurred during a bike rally on August 19. The latest arrest involves Banjoplang Dkhar, president of the KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle, who was taken into judicial custody following his appearance in court.

The August 19 rally, which was initially permitted by district administration, resulted in violence where participants allegedly attacked bystanders and pelted stones at vehicles. The unrest caused damage to at least 31 vehicles and left 18 people injured. The incident also led to heightened tensions between the states of Assam and Meghalaya, with transport operators in Assam blocking Meghalaya-registered vehicles at border points.

Several other senior KSU leaders, including the Central Executive Council president, vice-president, and general secretary, are currently in judicial custody. The accused face charges under the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
