Khasi Students’ Union threatens protests over government assurances
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has issued a three-day ultimatum to the state government, threatening to resume widespread protests if specific assurances are not met. The warning follows a central executive committee meeting in Shillong to review the progress of talks held on August 26.
Key demands include the establishment of entry-exit facilitation centres at Umling and Ratacherra to monitor influx, and the strict implementation of the Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act within a 20-day window. The union is also demanding the arrest of individuals involved in an assault on protesters during a public hearing for the Shree Cement plant expansion in East Jaintia Hills.
Additionally, the KSU has condemned what it describes as a “witch-hunt” by police, alleging that legal cases are being filed against union leaders almost daily while those responsible for previous acts of vandalism and violence remain at large. The union stated it will monitor the government's actions closely and will explore further agitation if concrete steps are not taken.
