Kherson Regional Art Museum damaged by Russian strike

A Russian strike has caused a devastating fire at the Kherson Regional Art Museum in Ukraine. While the State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported no casualties, the institution sustained significant damage to its building and collections.

According to reports, the fire destroyed historic plasterwork, parquet flooring, furniture, books, and the building’s electrical and heating infrastructure. The museum, considered a vital symbol of Ukrainian history and culture, faces an ongoing crisis to preserve its remaining artworks. This incident follows previous looting of the museum during the 2022 invasion, during which more than 15,000 works were reportedly moved to Russian-controlled Crimea.

Conservation experts and international communities are mobilizing to assess the damage and support restoration efforts. The strike occurred amidst broader aerial attacks targeting various Ukrainian infrastructure, including hospitals and warehouses.
