Russian strikes on Kherson region

Overview

Russian strikes in the Kherson region have targeted both cultural heritage and critical infrastructure. An initial strike caused a devastating fire at the Kherson Regional Art Museum, destroying historic plasterwork, flooring, furniture, and books, as well as the building’s electrical and heating systems.

Following this, Russian forces intensified attacks using glide bombs and drones. A recent strike using four guided aerial bombs targeted the city’s largest district heating plant, causing critical damage. Naftogaz reported that all equipment used for the production of electricity and heat at the facility was destroyed or rendered inoperable.

Regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin described the security situation as “extremely difficult,” warning that the city could face long-term shortages of electricity and heating as winter approaches. Prokudin noted that approximately 170 guided aerial bombs have been dropped on the Kherson region since July 1, and over 1,700 strike drones have been launched in the last two months. Due to the inability to intercept these specific aerial weapons, authorities have issued urgent evacuation pleas for vulnerable residents, including the elderly and families with children. Recent drone attacks in the Korabelnyi district have also resulted in civilian casualties, including the death of a 61-year-old man. The proximity of Russian forces across the Dnipro River leaves the urban area particularly vulnerable to ongoing shelling and aerial bombardment.
