Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly seeks legal action against Maryam Nawaz

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly has passed a resolution condemning Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for remarks suggesting that Punjab faces greater security threats from neighboring provinces than from neighboring countries. The resolution, tabled by Law Minister Aftab Alam, calls for the federal government to initiate legal proceedings against the Chief Minister under Article 6 of the Constitution and demands a public apology.

In response to the backlash, Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb defended the Punjab Chief Minister, stating that the criticism stems from Nawaz’s rising popularity rather than her statements. Aurangzeb also addressed allegations regarding the use of a government jet for a private trip to London, asserting that Nawaz would personally cover all associated expenses.

Controversy regarding the remarks has also extended to the Punjab Assembly, where lawmakers have submitted notices seeking a formal condemnation and withdrawal of the statement. Critics in the KP Assembly described the comments as anti-state and an attempt to create divisions within the country.
