Punjab security and inter-provincial political tension
Overview
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif identified provincial borders as a primary security vulnerability, stating that terrorism often enters Punjab from neighboring Pakistani provinces. During the launch of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub in Lahore, she noted that the province faces threats from organized crime, drug trafficking, and ethnic or religious conflicts. To address these issues, the provincial government has invested billions of rupees in technology, including an AI Intelligence Hub designed for real-time intelligence fusion and threat anticipation.
Nawaz Sharif’s remarks triggered political controversy, with leaders from other regions, such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, accusing her of fueling provincialism. In response, the Punjab government issued clarifications. Information Minister Azma Bukhari defended the Chief Minister, asserting that the comments were “taken out of context and misinterpreted” and were specifically intended to address the movement of militants across provincial boundaries rather than external threats. Bukhari further stated that the government remains focused on internal law and order while expressing confidence in national institutions to secure the country’s borders.
