Khyber Pakhtunkhwa emergency: Pakistan imposes governor's rule

The Pakistani federal government has imposed emergency and governor's rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, effective October 11. The decision, approved by President Asif Ali Zardari, was justified by federal ministers as a necessary measure to combat rising terrorism and address the provincial government's alleged failure to cooperate with national security efforts.

On Wednesday, both the National Assembly and the Senate passed resolutions endorsing the emergency. During parliamentary debates, federal officials argued that terrorism incidents in the province had increased significantly, while PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari characterized the PTI-led provincial government's actions as a ‘political suicide attack’ that necessitated the intervention.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has strongly rejected the move, calling it unconstitutional and an attack on provincial autonomy. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has filed a constitutional petition in the Peshawar High Court to challenge the legality of the proclamation and seek the restoration of the elected provincial government. Reports indicate that several PTI leaders have gone into hiding following police raids, and some officials have been placed in preventive custody.
