Khyber Pakhtunkhwa placed under emergency and Governor's rule

The federal government of Pakistan has imposed emergency and Governor's rule in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, removing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led provincial government. The decision, approved by President Asif Ali Zardari and ratified by Parliament, follows a surge in terrorism, with officials reporting 3,787 incidents in the province over the last year.

Under the new administration, 12 districts have been placed under direct federal control. Governor Faisal Karim Kundi stated that provincial policies will now be directed from Islamabad rather than Kabul. The move has drawn sharp criticism from PTI leaders and other opposition parties, who describe the suspension of the elected government as a serious attack on the democratic mandate and provincial autonomy.

Intelligence reports suggest that PTI leadership and provincial cabinet members have largely withdrawn from public protest following the imposition of emergency rule. While the federal government maintains the action was necessary to combat terrorism, critics argue it exacerbates political instability in a region vital to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
