Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa initiates school safety inspections after Peshawar collapse

Authorities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have launched a province-wide initiative to identify unsafe school buildings following a deadly roof collapse in Peshawar. The incident, which occurred on October 15, killed 35 people, including 34 children and a female teacher.

A report by the Capital Metropolitan Government revealed that the private school in Dir Colony was originally a residential structure and lacked an approved building map. Investigators found that the roof was a makeshift construction made of wooden planks and bricks, which could not support the weight of the students and furniture.

In response to the tragedy and social media reports of hazardous structures, Dr. Aamir Abdullah of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Advisory Council for Education stated that the Education Department is working to identify potentially dangerous buildings to prevent further accidents. The findings have intensified scrutiny regarding the oversight provided by the Private Schools Regulatory Authority.
