Peshawar school roof collapse and safety inspections

Overview

On October 15, a structural collapse at the Al-Khair School System in the Dir Colony area of Peshawar, Pakistan, killed at least 35 people. The victims included 32 to 34 students, mostly aged between 6 and 14, and one female teacher. The incident occurred when an upper-level roof collapsed onto a classroom below. Following the tragedy, authorities arrested the school owner, Mohammad Khan, and local police noted the building was structurally weak.

Subsequent investigations by the Capital Metropolitan Government revealed that the private school was a converted residential structure that lacked an approved building map. The roof was reportedly a makeshift construction of wooden planks and bricks that could not support the weight of the students and furniture.

In response, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provincial government launched a province-wide initiative to inspect school buildings. The Education Department is working to identify hazardous structures to prevent further accidents, a move that has increased scrutiny of the Private Schools Regulatory Authority.
