Kia EV2 earns five-star Euro NCAP safety rating
The Kia EV2, an affordable electric SUV, has achieved a five-star safety rating in the updated Euro NCAP testing protocols. The vehicle demonstrated strong performance in several key areas, including an 86% score for adult occupant protection and an 89% score for safety after the crash. Notable features contributing to these scores include an advanced eCall system and a cabin design that facilitates easy passenger evacuation.
In side-impact tests involving barriers and poles, the EV2 provided good or adequate protection for critical body regions. The inclusion of a center airbag was highlighted for its effectiveness in preventing front-seat passengers' heads from colliding during side impacts. Additionally, the vehicle received full marks for its use of physical controls for driving, comfort, and infotainment functions.
Despite the high overall rating, the report identified specific weaknesses. The vehicle scored 74% in safety assist and 66% in collision avoidance. Limitations were noted in automatic emergency braking performance at low speeds for pedestrians and cyclists. Furthermore, the system to alert drivers if a child is left in the rear seat is not included as standard equipment. Testing of the Intelligent Speed Limit Assistant (ISLA) across approximately 2,000 kilometers in Italy, Germany, and Austria showed the system correctly identified speed limit changes in 79% of instances and displayed the correct limit for 86% of the distance traveled.
